Bent Burger Walk - 9/14/14

Or - Tiptoe, through the Daisies...

It was another in a long series of warm and beautiful days here in the Great American Pacific Northwest. And a day just made for taking a walk.

My original idea was to go down to Seward Park for a pleasant walk around the peninsula. It was a good idea but unfortunately, nearly every other person in the area had the same idea. Oh, and they were having some kind of bike race starting there at the park, too.

It were crowded!! Shades of Seahurst Park!! I mean there was no parking in the park nor on the streets immediately around the park. Ah, crap!! It's that agley thing again.

I had planned on taking a walk and then, as a surprise for Carol, visiting Bent Burger. We had met the owner of Bent Burger earlier in the week when we visited The Stone House, a new restaurant he is getting ready to open on Rainier Ave. I thought it'd be a small treat to stop by, get a soda and some fries and just enjoy ourselves.

Keeping that in mind, I parked on Seward Park Ave. It wasn't that far from Bent Burger and I could sorta walk up onto it with Carol and, SURPRISE!!! Hahaha, I still got it.

So, busy park, alternate plan. And we were off!! It's fun walking around the neighborhoods in the Seward Park area. The houses are all unique, well-cared for and beautiful. I'm especially taken with the brick houses around there. A lot of character.

Where we stopped were a number of brick houses and we talked about them and the landscaping as we slowly made our way down the street. Funny thing was, I didn't see a lot of flowers. I chalked it up to it being late in the season, summer is almost gone and autumn is coming quick.

I kinda felt this would be the case for the rest of the day but slowly realized, as I took more and more pictures of flowers, that there were still plenty of them hanging around. Like these guys...

A lot of what we saw today were showing their age. But it's been a good summer for flowers growing here in the Seattle area. Plenty of sunshine and warm weather. Not as much water as they probably wanted and needed but, still, it was a good season.

Always like running across these cone flowers. Carol tells me that if I want them, I have to plant them now so they'll be ready next summer.

Not a lot of color, yet. Most of what we were seeing was muted and cool.

    Brick House Selfie Alert!!

There are the brick houses I was talking about, just over Carol's shoulder. Some really neat looking and original houses. Didn't like the stairs to get to the front door. It's a climbing thing. I don't like them. Period. End of discussion.

However, we did think the houses looked good and, for the most part, were appropriately landscaped. You can get an idea of what a great day it was from this picture.

And more flowers. Some were looking pretty tired after a long season.

And I got lucky and caught this Cabbage Butterfly flitting around. I do mean flitting. He was here for two seconds and then over there for two more seconds and then down there for three seconds...you get the idea.

The Cabbage White Butterfly is known in New Zealand as the White Butterfly. It is widespread and populations are found across Europe, North Africa, Asia and Great Britain. It has also been accidentally introduced to North America, Australia and New Zealand.

The caterpillar of this species is seen as a pest for commercial agriculture. Often referred to as the "Imported Cabbageworm", they are a serious pest to cabbage and other mustard family crops.

I turned this picture on its side so it looks a bit different.

And some more flowers. We walk along, see some flowers, stop, talk, shoot and walk on. Evidently, one of Seattle's Finest wasn't to sure about what we were up to. I was standing in someone's driveway, getting some pictures and Carol said he stopped and was staring at us. Then, when I rejoined Carol I guess he figured we were harmless and drove on.

Carol waved and smiled at him but got no response.

Rude.

Where was I? Oh, yeah, flowers. We saw plenty of them.

And I got a bee busy at work.

And a dandelion.

And another orb weaver spider. It's funny how these spiders come out so doggone shiny in every picture I take. It's like they reflect all the light and sorta shine. There he is, the bright little spot in the center, waiting for dinner to come along.

Ugh!!

I hate spiders.

Spin me a tale...

Then we found a small public garden by Wilson Street. The main thing was the sunflowers. They had quite a few.

The State Flower of Kansas.

The National Flower of Russia.

And there, two blocks beyond the Sunflower Garden, was Bent Burgers.

And this!! Evidently Sam Choy is some kind of a big deal in the cooking world. I have to admit, I'd never heard of him before the owner of The Stone House mentioned him and introduced us to his brother, Rick.

Is Poke a kind of Hawaiian food?

Maybe I'll get on-line and check it out.

Can it be better than Der Wienerschnitzel?

But, back to Bent Burgers...It's a whimsical restaurant where there are Super Heroes hanging around, the tables are covered in comics and the walls, well, the walls are...

...decked out in Super Heroes, too. Like the Daredevil.

And the best one of them all, bar none, is...

The Amazing Stranger from the Planet Krypton, The Man of Steel...

...Superman!!!

All the others are cool but pale in comparison.

Captain America

and The Amazing Spiderman.

They're good, but they aren't Superman.

The inside of the restaurant. Evidently, they don't have any AC. It is, as you know, The Great American Pacific Northwest and it's suppose to be cool. All the time.

Regardless, it was kinda warm in there when we ordered. The only people, other than the cooks, etc., were the young family sitting on the right. And Mom had them planted there because of the TV...for the kids.

Here's the patio where we and everyone else took refuge from the heat inside the restaurant. We just ducked in so Carol could see the place and so we got a soda and some fries. Oh, and I tried one of their boutique beers...Roger, it was a pilsner.

It was OK.

  Bent Burger Selfie Alert!!

And the Happy Couple.

Hahaha, put food in our gullets and we'll smile all the time!!

So after we finished our fries, we headed back to the mini...following a different route for a short while.

We wandered around and stumbled upon these.

Now, I already like Sunflowers...it's just icing on the cake when they look like this.

Seriously, isn't that something!?!?!

You are my sunshine, my only sunshine.

And this little guy, hiding down by the base of the sunflower, was no slouch, either. He was folding up for the night. When the sun goes down, the petals close up for the night.

And, to prove we see things other than just flowers, here's a friendly porch for one of the many cottages around this area.

Then we saw this Grand Dame...For Sale.

OK, real quick, how much do you think they were asking? Mind, fresh paint and trim, new wooden fence for backyard, lawn freshly resodded, new windows and frames...

How much?

Oh, it's a four bedroom house. And, there, on the side, that's a tankless water heater. Very modern.

And then, as we were making our way back, we saw more flowers.

And I took their pictures.

OK, real quick, did you make a guess as to how much that house was selling for?

They're asking...$950,000.00

That's right!!! Nearly a million dollars for that house.

Whadya think? Is it worth it?

And now back to our regularly scheduled program:

The setting sun coming over the mountain. Golden light.

And one more new flower.

I thought you'd like to see a bit of the brick houses we looked at when we started out. Each one different and each one a small treasure.

Safeway Supermarket Selfie Alert!!

We needed some milk so on the way back I stopped at our local Safeway. This one we call the Ghetto Safeway...for obvious reasons. The other one, a mile and a half in the other direction is the Expensive Safeway and the one we pass on the way to Walmart is the Cheap Safeway.

Hahaha, it all makes sense to us.

So, our plans had to become flexible, again. Fortunately, we don't have a place to go or a time to be there and so we can flex here and flex there. It's a great thing!!

Still, if you let yourself and keep your eyes open, you can have a good time doing just about anything. And you can find a good picture most anywhere.

All in all, it is a good life.

Indeed.

  Hooah!!
